How to use LSI keywords to boost your content

Latent semantic indexing (LSI) keywords are simply keywords that are semi-related to the keyword, used in a search query. 

These LSI keywords complement keywords and serve as helpers to guide search engines and users to stronger contextual details. It is never intended, however, to be interchangeable with said keyword or keywords with similar significance. 

How LSI keywords might be used 

Example one: Indirect Comprehension 

You can find some of the keywords in  your market - including terms your site is already ranking for - using Google Search Console.

Separating the high volume terms from lower volumes is a useful way to build your content strategy by using LSI keywords. Using LSI keywords for blog posts can help boost your rankings and potentially gain new customers. Just make sure you stay contextually relevant.

For example, while we might see “accelerator” in our keywords, we are not going to start writing about car parts. 

Example two: Indirect Search Queries 

These two examples are related, but let's go through it again. 

When a user is looking for some resources related to your main keyword, they might also look at secondary keywords without that being their direct intent.

Somebody searching for a “baby stroller” might also be looking for a baby seat or items relating to baby safety, for example. If your collections include items that have a symbiotic LSI relationship, you might want to consider targeting a wider variety of these on your collection landing pages.

By pointing your product keywords to the collection pages, you can send internal ranking signals to these pages to help search engines better understand their importance. 

Example three: Direct understanding of search intent

Search engines are increasingly trying to decipher what a user is actually searching for.

LSI keywords are invaluable here because the better a user’s experience on your site overall, the better your chances are of ranking higher and turning those visitors into customers.

Let’s use another example, while remembering the accelerant example we mentioned above.

If your website is about apples, your LSI keywords might centre around things like apple pie, fruits, healthy eating  and so on.

But if you do not create content that help define the context, search engines might think your site is about a phone or laptop.

Quality content is particularly important for LSI content, because the difference between apple pie and apple Pi is quite a few slices of the search engine serving.

LSI keywords are also useful when your target market is global and colloquialisms can cause a lot of confusing.

In the UK, for example, referring to pants means actual underpants. In other places, this simply means the things you wear on your legs – trousers.

“Pants for work” might not be so convincing to a searcher from the UK. Developing your LSI keyword strategy is as important, if not more important, than your main keyword strategy.

Not only because it will help search engines understand what you are offering, but it often leads to unintentional, err, leads that can boost your bottom line.
